Cingular Rumored To Slow Down HSDPA Deployments Too...

Back in March when the news came out that DoCoMo was slowing down its HSDPA deployments, we noted the likelihood that Cingular would need to do the same. So, it should come as no surprise to hear that Cingular's 3G plans are likely to be delayed. Of course, just like DoCoMo it sounds like they're trying to deflect the blame off of the technology. The claim is that Cingular "has too many things on its plate" right now. That may be true, but with everyone delaying HSDPA, it certainly hints at troubles with the technology.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

HSDPA will be slower than this

My guess is that cingular will fail to meet this reduced commitment. You have to wonder what is going on with HSDPA. It was supposed to be a relatively simple software upgrade or maybe a line card but not this. The 3GPP members are failing to execute again. It has become expected. That is not good. WiMAX is hype today but it will be a contender in the future if this lack of execution persists.
