Anyone Can Be A Carrier... But It Doesn't Mean They'll Be Any Good

We've written in the past about the fact that anyone can become a telecom company these days thanks to network owners being willing to offer up their network for virtual providers. While plenty of odd companies seem to be jumping into the space, it's worth remembering that just because you can become a carrier, it doesn't mean you'll be any good at it. In terms of technology, most virtual network operators don't have much to differentiate themselves. For the most part, they just have marketing skill or tie-ins with other offerings. However, the core of what they're offering is really no different than what everyone else is offering -- and without control of the actual network, the virtual provider is completely at the mercy of the network owner, even if they do something the virtual provider doesn't want.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
