Homeland Security So Confident In Own Abilities That They Have No Backups
from the backups?--we-don't-need-no-steeeenkin'-backups dept
While some organizations are having trouble keeping tabs on or adequately protecting backup data, it appears that the Department of Homeland Security has another solution: don't create any backups at all. A new audit showed that the folks at Homeland Security really didn't have in place many disaster recovery backup plans at all. And, of course, this is the organization whose job it is to tell all of us how to prepare in the event of an emergency. There are two ways to look at this. First, the Department of Homeland Security is so confident in its ability to protect this country and itself from any kind of disaster that no backup plan is needed. Alternatively, the Department of Homeland Security is a seriously screwed up bureaucracy that hasn't put in place the most basic steps to protect its own systems while claiming to be able to tell us how to protect ourselves. Which one seems more likely? Based on this, our own fear advisory level appears to be reaching orange.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
