Competition Hits The Place Shifting Space
from the ooh,-choices dept
Orb Networks has had a product out for a little while that lets you watch your television over the internet or on a connected device, and now it looks like the whole space is about to heat up a bit. USA Today has a mixed, but generally positive review of Orb's offering, noting that the technology still has some glitches. However, the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg has a much more glowing review of Orb's new competitor, the Slingbox from Sling Media. It's clear that this concept (called "place shifting" to pick up on the whole "time shifting" bandwagon) is about to get a lot more attention, thanks to a bit of competition. Now, all we need is for the entertainment industry to sue one or both of these companies and they'll get all the attention they need. Of course, such products will also make it so weak efforts like TiVoToGo will become even more useless than before. Update: Om Malik likes the Slingbox too.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
