Vodafone Japan's Latest Desperation Move: Wholesale!

Vodafone KK in Japan has been struggling massively, while the two big Japanese carriers, DoCoMo and KDDI, continue to grow rapidly. Basically, it seems like everything Vodafone has done has gone wrong, and that's resulted in a revolving door in the executive ranks for the company. While they keep trying random tactics to boost sales (none of which seem to work), they're getting increasingly desperate. This is especially true as it looks like they're about to face increased competition from below, since Softbank is likely to enter the market soon. So, it appears their latest strategy is not to focus so much on selling to end users (who are leaving quickly), but to become a wholesaler for other companies that want to offer mobile service. It's the carrier's carrier approach -- but any potential partners are going to need to be convinced that it makes sense to work with this company that has mostly struggled in the market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
