US Mobile Data Revenues Surge

A new report says the value of the US mobile data market in the first quarter shot up by 80% over last year, with Sprint enjoying the highest percentage of revenues from data, at nearly 10%, followed by T-Mobile at about 7%. Those figures are still well short of the 15% or so averages of European operators and the 20%-30% of some Asian carriers, but like those foreign operators, the figures are driven in the US by messaging -- perhaps giving some explanation to other numbers that might initially appear conflicting. The report singles out T-Mobile in particular, pointing out its customers sent an average of 67 messages per month in the quarter, a pretty staggering number for the US. Part of that is due to cheap prices, but selling messaging-centric devices and supporting popular IM services over SMS doesn't hurt, either.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
