Olympic Mobile Video Rights Up For Grabs For The First Time

The consortium of broadcasters that holds the European rights for the Olympics has opened up bids for mobile rights to the 2006 winter and 2008 summer Olympics, which would give winners the rights to broadcast moving pictures of the Olympics to mobiles for the first time. The demand for mobile TV remains in serious doubt, but live sporting events are one area where there could be an opportunity for providers to attract users. After seeing sporting events like the Super Bowl give a big boost to HDTV sales, and Europeans watching more of the 2004 summer games -- an average of 14 hours over 17 days -- than ever before, it wouldn't be surprising for mobile carriers to see the Olympics as the event that puts mobile TV and video on the map in a major way, and drive bids up accordingly.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
