News Sites Making More Creative Use Of Mapping Systems

from the it's-about-time dept

One of the frustrating things about newspaper websites is that most of them simply looked at the web as a way to take their print content and put it somewhere else. They very rarely looked at what additional features they could use on the web to make the content more valuable. However, with the rise of some new web services it appears that a few are finally realizing the opportunity. E-Media Tidbits is cataloging a number of examples where newspapers are using the Google Maps API to add an interactive map to an online news story. It's a simple, but effective, way to make the content much more useful. It's not, in any way, revolutionary, but it's a good start. Hopefully, it will lead to news organizations realizing additional ways they can make their online content much more useful and valuable to visitors (and advertisers).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
