Universal Sets Up Music-Centered MVNO

from the good-luck-with-that dept

Record label Universal says it will launch an MVNO centered on selling ringtones and other content from its stable of artists. It's working with a company called Single Touch, which will take content provided by Universal and distribute it on a virtual network running on top of Sprint's physical one. Universal launched a similar MVNO last year in France, while its parent company owns French operator SFR. This looks like a play by Universal to cut operators out of the ringtone loop. There's nothing wrong with that, but consumers' loyalty isn't defined by record label, it's to bands they like. The draw for Universal's virtual operator will be content from its acts -- but what happens when kids' tastes inevitably change to a band on a different label. Are they supposed to switch to its MVNO? This smacks of more meaningless short-term landgrabs for a part of the ringtone bubble rather than the start of a successful long-term business.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
