Australian Government Hates SMS Spam, Except When They Do It

from the do-what-I-say,-not-what-I-do dept

Australian authorities have gone after SMS spammers in the past, but now it appears the country's military is going to turn to the method to try and attract badly needed recruits. The government says people's contact information "can easily be bought from marketing organisations", though how those marketing companies end up with the info is often a little shady. Individual spammers like to assert that what they're doing is different and/or legal for whatever reason, but to the recipients, it's all the same. If the government gets into the business of splitting hairs to defend its own spamming, it will undermine its authority to regulate spam at all. Why not just avoid the mess by using a different method?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    On the other side

In America; high school students take a test the military gives out to 'predict' the kind of job students will be doing in their future. When the student hit around the end of senior year they'll call up the students and tell you did great on this test and a bunch of BS to sucker them in. Why doesn't AU do this?
