The Latest Must-Have For The Digital Home: An SMS Pillow

from the yeah,-that's-great dept

Philips researchers have created a pillow with a bunch of LEDs sewn into it that can receive and display text messages. Maybe the real reason people don't care about the "digital home" is because it's an amalgamation of stupid products like text-messaging lightbulbs rather than anything that actually might be helpful. Just think, though: you could have your lightbulb SMS your pillow to let you know it burned out. But what happens if the pillow's burned out? What does it send a message to?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Dont See The Point

As the lightbulb is only going to burn out whilst it is on, surely sending the message to the pillow is kinda useless! Is the same thing as Windows saying there is a problem with the modem driver and asking if you want to connect to the internet to update it!!!!!

    Cool UI feature

I have some cool lightbulbs from Europe, where the gadgetry is more advanced. When they burn out, they don't light up! Pretty clever, eh? I guess they'll hit the market here eventually too.

    LEDs

An LED will not burn out for a very very very very long time.

      Re: LEDs

You know... I've heard that, but the little LED keychain I've got burnt out completely recently. I barely used it, and now it's dead. So I'm beginning to take the "LEDs don't burn out for a really really really long time" statements with a grain of salt.

    SOS

Maybe the pillow can tell you that its time to get up, and maybe the pillow can remind you to make your bed.. And maybe the pillow will make being woke up by a bucket of water much more unpleasant.
