PalmSource Sells Self In An Attempt To Remind People It Exists

from the in-case-you-forgot dept

There had been some speculation recently that, fresh off selling the "Palm" brand back to PalmOne (now Palm), the PalmSource might sell itself back to Palm and create one single unit again. Of course, as rumors that Palm's next Treo will be running Windows Mobile gained a measure of credibility, the reunification of the Palms seemed that much less likely. In fact, if you think about it... if Palm dumps PalmSource as its OS of choice, what future does PalmSource really have? So far, they've been unable to gain much traction anywhere outside of Palm and any family feud between the two would be disastrous. Well, it turns out that the company was, indeed, for sale, but the buyer is Japan's Access, makers of mobile software. Whether or not Access can rescue PalmSource, however, is a much bigger question. The mobile OS space has some big horses and PalmSource hasn't been able to get enough traction to be much more than an afterthought at this point. Spending $324 million on a shrinking afterthought in a competitive market seems like a tricky move to justify.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    The Be Inc. Curse

the Be curse continues. Failure follows that OS everywhere. Palm purchased Be and made some of its code the basis of the new palm os but then dumped the kernel in favor of a linux kernel. Palmsource has a rough ride ahead.
