Bogus Laptop Seller Shocked To Discover His Jail Cell Is Real
from the waste-of-time dept
It seems like the scam where someone sells something (often computers) on eBay but never deliver any actual product is probably the original online auction scam. It's been around for so long, that you heap extra scorn on the scammers for being so damn unoriginal. However, one such scammer, after being caught didn't seem to show much remorse, and while waiting for his trial to begin was arrested on other charges (involving a traffic stop and lying to an officer and using fake ID). This arrest broke the terms of his pre-trial release so the police went to arrest him and he threatened the cop with a knife and said he would kill him. He also tried to steal a truck and sprayed the cop in the face with a fire extinguisher. You would think that such actions would pretty much ensure this guy spend quite a lot of time in jail, but he was only given two years, after which he appealed saying that the six months he then spent in jail for resisting arrest should count towards the two years he got for selling non-existent laptops. The court disagreed and has sent him to jail for two years.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Heh
Or the girl who did the right thing by ignoring cyber-bullies who threatened her on the phone -- except, the cyber-bullies made good on their threats by beating the living shit out of her, cutting up her face with a knife, and extinguished dozens of cigarettes on her arms.

Re: Heh
Mystery is a wonderful trap; too bad you're caught in such a dishonorable game.
