Who Cares About Hotspots When You've Got 3G?

As surveys show low interest among business users to use WiFi hotspots, and EV-DO coverage spreads around the US, momentum among business travelers to use 3G data cards instead of WiFi hotspots appears to be growing. While hotspots typically offer higher speeds, the hassles of setup and the $10 here, $10 there access fees have a lot of users deciding the $80 a month for EV-DO isn't so bad after all. The momentum should continue as Sprint's offering gets up and running, and Cingular's HSDPA network comes on line over the next several months. With growing popularity at $80 per month, one's got to wonder what would happen if operators finally broke that $80 rule and lowered prices (for real).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Current move towards lowered EVDO prices

Currently Verizon has dropped their costs of unlimited EVDO to 60/month. For how long? No one may know.
