VeriSign Gets In The Middle Of Blogging Too
from the dave-winer,-meet-crazy-frog dept
Apparently it's a good day to have "weblogs" in the name of your company. Following the buyout of Weblogs Inc. today comes the news from Silicon Beat that VeriSign is buying Dave Winer's Weblogs.com for a hefty $2 million. This is likely to cause some confusion concerning what VeriSign wants with the site (it's not a company, just a service, basically), but it actually does seem to fit with their overall strategy of being in the "middle" of everything. VeriSign is sort of the antithesis of companies betting on decentralization, preferring to look for ways to manage large or complex systems in the middle. With the growth of "pinging" RSS (and other) feeds, this puts VeriSign right in the middle again. The trick will be how they plan to add value from that central position. The early talk is about adding security features to blogs, but it could go much further. Perhaps the pendulum is swinging back towards centralized services rather than decentralized.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
