The Disconnected Stay Disconnected

from the no-need-for-that-internet-thing dept

As many of us have seen the internet become even more important to our daily lives, it appears the the core group of people unconnected to the internet are remaining unconnected. For some people, they just don't see the need for the internet and don't seem to want to be convinced either way. Some of it may be the cost, but it sounds like some percentage of Americans simply have no interest in joining the online age, no matter what the cost is. So, even as internet access has become cheaper and more ubiquitous, those same non-users are choosing to remain non-users.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Lead Us Not To Temptation

Will going online cause you to eat too much and drink too much, like these new sushi and sake-shaped USB's?

    Who Cares?

Who cares if people choose to avoid the Internet?

I choose not to have a piece of technology many offices still have .. a fax machine.

If they want to communicate with me, they're on the net, if they're not, they don't exist in my book (sorry Grandma).

    Connected

This is interesting, and even more so would be studies done comparing groups of the connecteds and disconnecteds, in areas like stress level, memory loss, concentration, overall happiness, etc.

The results may give an indication as to why the group stays unconnected.
