Will Retired Baby Boomers Revitalize Open Source Projects?

from the giving-back dept

Bob Cringely's latest theory is that as baby boomer techies start retiring, many of them will start contributing heavily to various open source projects. The idea is that their skills are still relevant, they'll want to do "something" and working on open source projects is sort of a way of "giving back" to the community. I do know some retirees who have been busy hacking away on things for fun and for the community -- so there's at least some truth to this -- but you have to wonder just how many will actually want to do this. Some might, but will the impact really be as big as Cringely implies?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Revitalize?

Whats to revitalize? Open source has never been better as far as I can tell. Some retired techies pouring time and money into OSS projects will help for sure but its not things are going badly for OSS
