Google Waves Enthusiastically To Madison Avenue
from the yoooohooooooo dept
Last Thursday, we pointed to a NY Post story saying that Google was working to expanding their advertising sales effort into television. Apparently, the NY Post broke that story a little bit early. Both the NY Times (Google Wants to Dominate Madison Avenue, Too) and the Wall Street Journal (Google Weighs on Madison Avenue) published nearly identical stories about Google's ambitions to change how all kinds of advertising is sold. These stories did not appear by accident. Seeing both the NY Times and the WSJ publish such similar pieces within hours of each other suggests pretty clearly that Google "gave" them this story -- and that means Google is putting Madison Avenue on notice. It's Google's way of telling Madison Avenue that they're serious about this, and seeing how the advertising industry reacts. So, for those who hadn't yet realized that Google is an advertising company, it seems there's not much excuse to claim ignorance any more.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Do you ever not trash Google?
I guess I'm confused as to how this is trashing Google. It wasn't intended to trash Google at all. I actually think it's pretty pro-Google, showing how strong they've become as an advertising firm.
And, what's extra amusing is that it was just a month ago that people accused us of never saying anything bad about Google at all.
So, which is it? Are we too nice to Google or too mean to Google?
As far as we're concerned we call what we see, no more, no less.

Where did I bash Google? Hell, 99% of the time I'm defending it from "Ooh, it's so big!" losers on Betanews.
You did *read* the comment, right?
