Finally, Some Wireless Broadband Competition
from the 80-per-month-club dept
In addition to its overpriced music store, Sprint also today fully launched its EV-DO network. The consumer, phone-only plans are priced at $15, $20 and $25, each allowing access to more TV and radio channels, but they all allow for unlimited data access. If a user wants to tether their phone to their computer, it's an additional $25 per month. So a user could get unlimited EV-DO access on their laptop (via their phone) for as little as $40 per month plus voice charges -- a pretty decent shot across the bow of Verizon and its more expensive data plans. We've bemoaned the lack of real competition in the wireless broadband market before, but it looks like things could be changing quickly, with Sprint's launch today, and Cingular's 3G launch rumored to come as early as tomorrow.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
