Microsoft: Web 2.0 Is Now Live.... Literally

from the embrace-and-extend dept

Microsoft, as expected, has announced their new "software as services" strategy, and it's basically taking all the "Web 2.0" buzz words, tying them up with existing Microsoft offerings and renaming the whole thing using the "Live" tag, which previously had just been used for the Xbox. Reading through the various comments from folks at the announcement it certainly seems like the "Live" vision isn't particularly clear. Most seem sort of confused by the whole thing. All of the descriptions are having trouble getting the point across: "Sounds like a bit of Web 2.0 mixed with Microsoft's live naming theme -- Live Meeting, XBox Live. Services = Software, in a broad way, from hosted services like email and CRM to MSN and mapping mashups." and "Windows Live, is not Windows. Rather, it's "Internet based personal services to bring together your digital world." But Windows Live isn't MSN.com either. It sounds basically like a new Web portal. Office Live sounds similar, but business focused and easy to integrate with Microsoft Office (but you don't need Office to use Office Live). Some of these Live services will be free, others will be subscription-based." Clear as mud. In the meantime, it appears that the folks on stage have discovered what we mentioned last month. With so much focus on network based applications, it certainly helps to have a reliable network that works. Whoops. Hurray for live demos.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    MS Wants your DataCenter

So to sum this up, MS wants to become a utility company and essentially own your data and your data center. They have been engaged in an outsourcing engagement in the Midwest that they are using to develop their IT Outsourcing practice that will soon be coming after a data center near you.

So why now? They have obviously reached the pinnacle of software sales growth and are looking to finally cut out their entire partner community and the IT folks that they sell to today in order to gain access to residual based incomes from the very businesses that we work for.
Some of you may think I’m crazy, but look at it from a chess players perspective and you will see the hints from Mr. Ozzie. The small business is first, then the Enterprise environments are next.
Frontbridge and LiveMeeting are just the beginning of what is to come. They have yet to address a key obstacle though, SOX. When you see that issue addressed, it will time to start wearing armor plating to the dinner, especially if you are dining with MS.
