Rupert Murdoch Maybe Sorta Possibly Getting Into The US Broadband Market, Maybe
from the maybe,-possibly dept
Talk about vague. Fresh off of buying up a bunch of websites popular with the kids these days and now needing a strategy to wrap around them and the various other properties he owns, Rupert Murdoch gave the Wall Street Journal not quite a non-denial on the question of whether or not he's going to start a broadband company: "Here (in the United States), we don't know. We may be forming a company with partners to build something out here that would give you broadband." Of course, this comes just days after Murdoch-owned DirecTV was saying that they're looking to get into the wireless business, too. Meanwhile, here we are, again, with a media company that's been buying up web properties and is looking to get into the broadband market too. Haven't we seen this movie before... and didn't it end badly?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
