Australian Government Fed Up With Zombies, Gets Proactive With Software

from the if-the-ISPs-won't-do-it... dept

It appears that the Australian government is fed up with the fact that ISPs aren't going out and stopping zombiefied computers from connecting to the internet. They've gone and written their own application to identify likely zombie victims and will send the data to ISPs, telling them to deal with those users. The idea is that, hopefully, the ISPs will help the infected users clean up their machines, but if that doesn't work, those users should be cut off. Of course, how successful this is may depend on how accurate the software really is. Still, this really raises the question of why the government is doing this at all? Why aren't the ISPs tracking down these users on their own?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

      Re: No Subject Given

zombie computers have been compromised by hackers, a computer virus, or a trojan horse, and perform malicious tasks of one sort of another, under the direction of the hacker. Many owners of zombie computers are unaware that their systems are zombies or that any hacker attack ever occurred.
