3 Italy Buys A TV Station

Hutchison Whampoa's 3 operator in the UK has been trying to cast itself as a media company to investors in the buildup to its IPO, but its Italian brother has taken things a step further by buying a TV station. 3 Italy's bought a regional broadcaster in the country not for its existing station -- which will be shut down -- but for its nationwide digital TV license, which 3 will use for a DVB-H network to broadcast TV to mobile phones. 3 Italy already has streaming TV and movie content, which doesn't sound too appealing, but streaming over the mobile network can be a pretty inefficient transport method. But streaming or broadcast, consumer interest in mobile TV isn't high, while 3's success has been built on cheap voice, not data services. 3 appears convinced that mobile TV is a golden ticket; we remain pretty skeptical.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
