Motorola's Reverse Psychology?
Every year since 2003, someone has declared it "the year of 3G," and yet, 3G never seems to take off to quite the level we're told to expect. It's definitely growing -- especially in the US this year -- but have we reached a real breakthrough yet? Probably not. However, here's something odd. Rather than spend the waning days of 2005 declaring 2006 as "the year of 3G," as is the custom of many in the mobile industry, Motorola is stepping up and saying 2006 will not be a breakthrough year for 3G, saying that the technology just isn't there yet. My guess is that, after years of failing to predict the real tipping point for 3G, Motorola is trying some reverse psychology.
