Even Carriers Can't Figure Out Tariffs
Mobile virtual network operators have found that one way they can compete is to offer simple, easy-to-understand tariffs, given the overly confusing plans that are the norm from incumbent operators. But the confusion isn't just with consumers -- a recent survey found that one in four customer service reps at UK operators couldn't answer basic questions about their company's tariffs. The survey also points out that 40% of UK mobile users are unhappy with the level of customer service they get from their operator, reflecting similar data from this side of the Atlantic. The group behind the survey points out a particular bugbear of many subscribers: carriers focus more on attracting new users than retaining current ones. Given all this, it's little wonder that operators continue to rely on long-term contracts with high termination fees to hang on to customers, rather than actually focusing on serving them well.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
