Sprint Invests Again In IPWireless
Together, Sprint and Nextel have tried out pretty much every wireless broadband technology available in their quest to determine what to use for their next-generation network. There's been a lot of speculation the company would use WiMAX, while some earlier comments indicated something from Flarion might get the nod, and just last week, Techdirt wrote, "Many are expecting WiMAX from Sprint in its 2.5GHz properties, but Sprint may yet surprise us: I don't think WiMAX is among their top two choices." So Sprint Nextel has surprised a few who thought WiMAX was a shoe-in, announcing today its second investment in IPWireless, whose UMTS TD-CDMA technology it's currently testing in Washington, DC. Why would Sprint invest $10 Million in IPWireless unless it was at least a leading candidate for their 2.5GHZ spectrum? Separately, IPWireless also announced its own mobile TV product for operators, leaving the unproven market with no shortage of technical solutions.
