Bluetooth SIG Shrugs Off UWB Split
As predicted, the IEEE's task group on ultra-wideband decided to disband this week, unable to come to an accord on which of two competing standard proposals to back. In addition to the inevitable customer confusion it will cause, the split leaves Bluetooth in the lurch, after the SIG that controls it had planned to harmonize it with the UWB standard so the products could eventually be compatible. For what it's worth, the SIG's director says the group will choose which proposal to back and push forward with its plans, hoping to "ensure interoperability and consumer satisfaction". Of course, if the groups behind the two competing proposals didn't care about those things enough to work within the standards group, why would they care how the Bluetooth SIG feels about it?
