Talking Seriously About Mobile Porn

For years and years we've been hearing about how mobile porn is going to be a big business. Those who believe it point out that the VCR and the internet both represent markets that were driven forward by adult content -- and therefore mobile content will grow in the same way. In fact, there's an entire conference this week dedicated to the business of mobile porn. Since it's focused on the business side, it's not too surprising that it actually sounds fairly boring. However, most of the people at the conference have a vested interest in the business, so they're hyping up just how big mobile porn will be. There's just one problem. People just aren't that interested. Sure, some people are, but what people seem to be missing is that the VCR and the internet were pushed forward by porn because it helped people view porn in the privacy of their own homes. Mobile porn is the opposite -- about allowing people to view porn outside of their home, in public and on a tiny, tiny screen. So, sure, there are going to be some people who want it, but it's still difficult to see it really being that big a market.

Should Mobile Porn Even Be Allowed?
I think that the right to free speech should never be suppressed, but I also think that there is a huge ethical question as to whether the public should even allow mobile porn. The public shouldn't be put into a position where they have to be exposed to pornography. It has sexual harassment written all over. What people want to do at home is up to them, but do you really want to be sharing a crowded train with some guy who seems a little too into his Video iPod?

I'm not saying that porn shouldn't be allowed onto portable video devices, only that we should think about how we implement this media.

Hmmm...
Was that someone's boob or thumb I just saw on your 320 x 240 moible screen? I hate to break this to everybody, but a mobile phone or PDA leaves a little bit to be desired as a porn delivery vehicle - for some reason, other than people sending SPAM MMS messages, I don't see it having much of a future.

Now, the real question is, why aren't people considered about all those people with laptops and wireless connections to the Internet.... Nice wide 16" inch screen, 32 bits of color and surround sound... Porn people may not always be so smart, but this sounds like a case of the analysts having a little less common sense than the MMS spammers.

I think our biggest problem with mobile phones is still the inconsiderate people that like to have very strange conversations on them while standing right behind you where you can hear every word. Some of those conversations are definitely pornographic in nature, maybe thats what the analysts meant...

Well, ringtones, wallpapers and games are rediculously huge industry. People dont spend money on sensible things, and when it comes to boobs and booty vs small screens, the B&B will win. Mobile porn is already booming and making a lot of people a lot of money overseas (UK, Western Europe, Asia). The reason it hasnt happened to big in the states yet is because our mobile phone technology lags 3-5 years behind europe and asia

The killer mobile phorn app is not to watch other people, but to make sure you record yourself in action. Most people would freak out bringing a full camera out next to the action, but start whispering about the camera phone in her ear and they get all excited!

Mobile porn will be something that is quite "normal" has anything else in the adult space.

If you think about it, if people wanted to view adult material on a computer, they have to go home, lock the door, or canned from their job because it was on company time.

With a mobile.. It is very personal and always with you. This notion of "why have it, if you can't masterbate to it" is well.. crazy.. It's adult entertainment and with that.. We will carry it, share it, and get more of it.

Porn on your mobile is not just accessed because of the benefits of it being 'mobile', it's can also be about increased privacy. Most households have shared access to the family's computer, meaning your habits could be exposed by people who you'd rather not see it, be it a significant other or fmaily member. A mobile device is very much an individual's possesion, they are rarely shared, so people feel safer browsing porn on their mobiles. With the introduction of more modern handsets e.g. the Samsung D600 with its TV-OUT, mobiles are fast becoming just another way to get access to your porn, but not necessarily the medium through which you watch it.

It shouldn't be thought of as much as 'mobile porn' i.e. just for your cellphone or mobile device, but porn that is accessed through your mobile as just another means of obtaining it.

I do believe mobile porn will be growing. Its just inevitable. All the big players in the industry are testing the waters and are slowly dipping in. This will surely lead to higher exposure. I guess only time can tell.

Mobile Porn
All I can say is that Mobile Porn is is big in the UK. I work in the industry and it is growing rapidly. The only thing that holds it back is the legislation changes that keep being imposed. With 3G Handsets it has become a much more useable medium that delivers good quality video content. We find that a lot of people (lads) are more interested in it to show their mates etc... than entirely for their own sell gratification.

Sure enough the convergence of technology would suggest that it is only going to get bigger - Broadband is now available on mobile allowing cheap video content to be viewed via the handset anywhere any time in the UK. Its Getting Much Better
We too have seen a big growth in the sales side of things for our 3gp adult videos, but the bigest increas we had is when we got other people to sell our videos as well with a 50% split between us and them. So anyone selling mobile porn try and get affiliates for your site or products it increases 10 Fold more or less over night. And get a mobile wap version up and running thats works a treat too.

Just another medium
Many people - including the author of this article - are dismissing mobile porn and pointing to "porn in public" and "tiny screens and poor quality" as reasons for their dismissal. The first argument assumes that most people only want to experience porn in their own homes; the second assumes that they want it at higher res and with higher quality sound than mobile devices provide.

Both of these assumptions are flawed.

People already masturbate pretty much everywhere (especially young men). They also carry "mobile" porn with them in other forms, such as magazines or on laptop. Who hasn't ducked into the nearest public toilet - uni campus, train, park, shopping centre - and whipped a mag out of their backpack for a quick play? Mobile devices offer greater discretion, privacy and convenience, as well as opportunities to share content and to be your own "porn star".

Secondly, the early days of Internet porn showed many people aren't that fussy about the quality of their porn provided it "does the job". I can still clearly remember waiting half an hour or more to download tiny (say 320x240) 20 second movie clips over 33kbps modem. Sure, I've got broadband now and there's much better porn available online - but when I was downloading those 320x240 clips there was infinitely better already available on VHS.

Besides, the screens on mobile devices are getting larger and higher-res all the time and mobile network bandwidth is also increasing. The ability to supply adult content in this way will fuel demand which will drive further innovation.

Don't discount the novelty factor! There will be plenty of people keen to download and watch porn on their mobiles just because they can - it's new, different, and governments don't like it. This all sounds like guaranteed success to me.
