MySQL Told Larry Ellison To Use His Acquisition Money Elsewhere

from the no-surprise-there dept

Given all the talk about Oracle's decision to buy up various open source companies, you have to think the very first target would have been MySQL... and you'd be right. MySQL has admitted that Oracle approached it concerning an acquisition, but MySQL's CEO turned Larry's money down -- saying he'd rather build the company up independently (though with plenty of investment money from others, including VCs, Intel, Red Hat and SAP). Obviously, that's what he's going to say, as no one discussed the details of the offer -- such as how much money was involved. Either way, it kind of makes you wonder why Oracle doesn't release some of its existing code as open source, if they're suddenly such big believers in the open source movement. Buying up open source companies brings a community, but there are other ways to push open source code as well.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    sarcasm?

Oracle probably has little or no interest in helping the open source community. Sometimes the best way to beat your enemy is to buy them. Microsoft taught us that.

It's kind of sad when a really good dolop of saracasm is lost on those that don't appreciate it.

    Re: sarcasm?

what part of "I hope you are joking" didn't you understand? I was hoping he was being sarcastic, but if not, I was just voicing my opposition to his statement.
