From Spam To Olympic Gold?

from the or-not dept

I've been fairly successful this year completely avoiding anything having to do with the Olympics, but this story is just too odd not to pass on. The winner of the gold medal for mogul skiing is being referred to as "the spam man" for the internet business he started as a teenager, which apparently made him millions of dollars. The details, however, are extremely sketchy. There doesn't seem to be any indication that he was actually a spammer. Most stories seem to indicate that he ran a popup advertising company (which some may consider just as bad, but it's not really spamming). Of course, the guy's own refusal to talk about the business seems to actually be driving much more interest in the story. He wouldn't even name the company when asked about it and got angry that anyone wanted to know about it.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

This reminds me of how much I hate the media. They're so desperate for a story that they're trying to spin their failed attempt to find a story into a story. What's worse is that they know what the story would be if they succeeded and it's not even worth reporting to begin with ("Olympic winner ran a business." Ooooh, ahhhh). What's worse still is that their attempts to create a story are publicly humiliating someone who just acheived their life dream.

    Re: No Subject Given

Amen. It's like this Gretzky crap - they desperately want to turn this gambling scandal into a Wayne Gretzky scandal and keep failing to turn up any leads. If there's no story, kids, leave it alone until you find one.
Trying to generate a story by repeating something often enough is embarrassing.

    Pop-ups on a story about Pop-ups

The best part about this whole non-story is the link to the "Spam-man" website which talks about the Evils of pop-up's while at the same time having pop-ups on it's site...

    Typo

If only because you frequently link back to older articles that relate to new stories, you may want to correct the spelling of Olympic in the title.
