Did Google Forget Its Chinese License?

from the ah,-the-fine-print dept

While most of the world is focused on how pissed off the US government is about Google's move into China, it would appear that the Chinese government may not be all that pleased either. We'd already reported an earlier claim that Google's China version had been blocked in the country, while the American version was still available. It's not clear if anything has changed on that, but a newspaper in Beijing may have the reason. According to the paper, Google failed to obtain the necessary license to offer an internet service in China. However, a Google spokesperson responds that while Google doesn't have one directly, it has partnered with a Chinese firm that does have the license -- a practice it claims is common. Either way, this seems like a minor bureaucratic point that could be corrected (if anything is actually wrong) pretty quickly.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
