I'm Getting Rug Burn From All This Astroturf
from the lying-cheating-and-generally-full-of-it dept
Telephone companies have been pretty aggressive in their astroturfing to try to drum up support for their entrance into the television business, whether it's sending fake letters to local officials or getting people to complain about their cable company in exchange for a free iPod. DSL Reports points out that the cable companies have fired back by pointing out all this astroturfing on a site called "PhoneyBaloney.net" that highlights several different front groups the telcos are using. That's all well and good -- except, of course, the cable companies like to astroturf, too. So, in this fight, it sounds like you can't believe anything anybody says -- which ends up being helpful how?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Why should we pay for your product/service?
Don't tell me what's wrong with the competitions' product, tell me what's so great about yours. If I'm using the competition, I should already know how bad they suck! Convince me your product is better if you really expect me to switch.
