How Many Websites Do You Visit?

from the not-so-many dept

As people are settling in to their internet usage, it appears that many have a pretty small set list of sites they visit each day, and that's it. A study in the UK found that 51% of surfers visit six or fewer websites on a regular basis. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, we're talking about "on a regular basis" -- and just how many sites do you need on a regular basis? This is especially true if some of those sites are aggregator or portal sites that pull together services and content from a variety of other sources. This is, if anything, good news. People have found the core sites online that are useful to them, and that's what they usually visit.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Sounds about right...

Wikipedia, Google Portal, GMail, (Unspecified) Forum, Reference.com, IMDB.. pretty much sums it up. Additional sites are either linked from the previous, or found searching for something specific.

I would say that most of the sites listed I also visit daily. A few that have not been mentioned that I use daily are:

      Topix Local News
      Herald Tribune

      BoingBoing
      Engadget
      Lifehacker
      Battelle's Searchblog
      EmailBattles
      O'Reilly Radar
      Scripting News

      enjoy...

While we are sharing useful sites I thought I'd give this site a boost:

        Dave Pollard's Blog
        http://blogs.salon.com/0002007/

I don't visit the site everyday, as it would make my head explode. I would however, vote it the best blog on the planet.

    With or without RSS Feeds

If you only count the page that has my RSS feeds, then 1 site.
If you count the RSS'ed sites themselves, then about 50.

Almost ditto. I've been using Newz Crawler, to let me read/keep up with more websites, where as before I had it, it was about 6. Now I keep adding sites, as I can browse more effeciently with Newz Crawler (no, I don't work for them, just impressed with there product).

    way more than 6

I have a rotation of 10 news sites, 13 humor sites, 1 BBS, and Yahoo Mail that I visit daily. As well as some weekly sites and some every-other-day sites.

Of the news sites, most are headline aggregators like techdirt, Metafilter, Fark, etc. So, I end up visiting far more than even my base number of sites.

As it is, between all of those, I can usually cover all of my sites between the time during Breakfast and Lunch.

    Sounds About Right

Yep, I'd say I have a set 6-8 that I visit each day out of habit. If I get really bored I use the Stumble Upon extension for Firefox to find some other cool sites.

I've heard this a couple of times now. My sites are at a count of 6, but I run 3 of them. http://www.MySpace.com, http://www.google.com, http://www.bestmyspaceprofiles.com, http://www.shoptandm.com, http://www.WSJ.com, http://www.759domains.com, and anything that StumbleUpon takes me to.

    An interesting topic...

I visit hundreds of sites every day, as I spend the great majority of my free time online. But thinking only in terms of sites I visit very regularly, it's only a few news sites, several blogs, and google.com.

That's pretty interesting, really. I'm constantly studying and researching anything and everything I can, and I end up wandering all over the web daily. However, even though I'm spending my whole day online, my "local Internet" is only a handful of sites.

I qualify as "power surfer" based on time-spent and familiarity, but all I have is some RSS feeds and Google. Not even one bookmark.

    Go figure...

It's interesting. I think what the article says is true because sites nowadays are far more expansive, dynamic, and satisfactory to the user than in the past. Who needs to go to several sites when one site has everything you need? Between imdb and wikipedia, I'm surprised the average person would need to research anything anywhere else.
