User Reviews For The Online Meat Market

from the been-there-done-that dept

Consumer reviews, like the ones found on Amazon, have proven to be a useful way for users to find and get opinions on books, DVDs, and electronics. So it's no surprise that several companies want to extend the idea to potential dates. On these sites, which mainly seem to target women, users can point out which men on internet dating sites are actually married, or whose pictures don't resemble the uglier reality. One problem is that these sites seem mainly focused on attacking people, as opposed to talking them up (seems there's some selection bias at work here, good matches are more likely to stay together after dates). Maybe a site should borrow from the Epinions model, in which reviewers get paid if their recommendations lead to a connection -- "BravesFan1254 was a great kisser, would have worked out if I hadn't left for law school".

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Leading to more lies

"Maybe a site should borrow from the Epinions model, in which reviewers get paid if their recommendations lead to a connection -- "BravesFan1254 was a great kisser, would have worked out if I hadn't left for law school"."

Then the women (wanting to get paid) can lie for the men who are already so pathetic they have to lie to get a date.

News Flash...most men lie, especially if it will make it easier to get laid. Women lie just as much about their appearance and age.

If you're that concerned with your dates looks, try a bar...you can look before you buy.

satiric humor in posts is what leads to good discussion. I'm simply expanding on Joe's joke...thankyou for putting that out though.

    Re: Leading to more lies

Hey Dani..."How ya doin'" :-) Sorry, couldn't resist. I agree that there are MANY liars of both genders and have some experience on a dating site. I have been quite surprised on several occasions and am no longer stooping to such a level. My ladies are now coming from the normal places...bars or church. (tongue firmly implanted in cheek)

    Re: Leading to more lies

Here's an idea for you guys:

try the grocery store...a man who cooks (or at least pretends to so he can get laid) should always be able to meet a nice woman looking at produce...lol

    Re: Leading to more lies

i was actually going to do this with girlfriendreview.com & boyfriendreview.com (model from the consumerreview suite of sites) but i didn't have time nor desire to deal with the legal/corp crap that's attached with this sort of venture. anyone wanna buy a couple of domain names?

who would give up a good one?

If you did happen to find someone worthy of dating on one of these online networks, who would advertise him to the rest of the world?

That's the reason a review for this market seems to be mostly attacks. Women don't brag about the good ones for fear another woman may snag him. Men are too busy moving along to the next one to write a review.

The reason the sites that cater to women are focused on attacking people is because most women are judgmental bitches especially when some guy has failed to pamper them, and cater to them, in the way in which they feel entitled.

    As Dani has demonstrated.
