On Second Thought: New Deadline For E911 Service May Be Never

from the letting-it-slide dept

The FCC's history of repeatedly backing down on E911 related deadlines is pretty well documented by this point -- as is the double standard used between mobile E911 and VoIP E911. Of course, a big part of the issue with mobile E911 was that money collected as part of a tax for E911 systems and sent to police for the purpose of upgrading their equipment, instead went to things like winter boots and ballpoint pens. A new Congressional report is looking into the matter and has found that some areas may simply never get around to implementing E911 service, though tax money was still collected in those regions for E911. I'm sure we all feel much safer now. Still, apparently the lesson in all of this is to feel free to ignore FCC deadlines.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
