Vodafone Hits 10 Million 3G Users, Right On Time

When Vodafone launched its consumer 3G services back in November 2004, it said it expected to have 10 million users by March 2006, and it said today it's hit its target with a couple weeks to spare. While the growth fits their schedule, it's pretty slow going, considering they launched the service in a dozen European countries and Japan, while 3G services now account for just 7% of Vodafone's business -- hardly the big boost the company expected when it shelled out tens of billions for 3G licenses several years back. While 3G handsets have certainly gotten better and come down in price, operators are still struggling to make the case to consumers of why they should shell out for 3G content and services.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
