Discussing The Future: Getting Ready For Techdirt Greenhouse

from the almost-there dept

Last week we held a dinner salon, sponsored by Topix.net, as something of a warm up for the next Techdirt Greenhouse idea workshop. It was a fun discussion with a small group of smart folks from around the area, trying to determine what's going to happen in 2008 (on the assumption that anything happening in 2007 is already being built). The discussion went through a variety of both macro and micro-level predictions, with plenty of disagreements (and, in a few cases, not enough disagreements). We didn't necessarily come to definitive conclusions on anything, but similar to the discussions at Techdirt Greenhouse, the interesting parts came much more from the discussion itself rather than the conclusions. In this case, it raised a number of good (and sometimes controversial) points about how people perceive China, Google and phenomena like "social networking." We're now close to finalizing the presenter list and discussion topics for Techdirt Greenhouse, and I'm already seeing much of what was discussed at the dinner showing up in the discussion topics. Over the next few weeks, we'll start revealing some of the discussion topics to get people thinking about them ahead of time, but in the meantime, we wanted to remind people that there's only one week left for early bird registration to the event. For those of you still not convinced, feel free to read through some of what those who attended last time had to say about the event.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
