TD-SCDMA Apparently Ready, But Chinese 3G Licenses Still Aren't

We've quit paying so much attention to the story of 3G in China because, as you might guess, it still hasn't happened. However, with the big ITU Telecom World show in Hong Kong this week, the hype's kicking up a little bit, with a Chinese minister declining to give a specific timetable (surprise, surprise), but saying it could happen "very soon". Of course, forgive us for remaining skeptical, since the same guy is quoted in another story as saying the timing "will be determined by the market", which is sort of odd, because it seems like everybody else is waiting on this guy and the rest of his government cronies for the go-ahead. It's not clear why they're still waiting, particularly as somebody from telecom equipment company ZTE says the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard is finally ready. The bottom line: nothing's happened, again, so keep on waiting.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
