The Axis Of NoTube: List Of Countries Banning YouTube Over Juvenile Videos Growing
from the banning-makes-the-world-a-better-place dept
Well, that didn't take long at all. Following the lead of such forward thinking governments as Thailand and Turkey, it appears that Morocco is the latest country to ban YouTube. The story is pretty much the same. As in both of those other countries, it sounds like the "complaint" is that someone put up a video critical of that country's monarch. You would think that given how the situation played out in both Turkey and Thailand (i.e., the banning gave those videos much more attention and credibility) that someone would have suggested that maybe a countrywide ban would backfire. Apparently, however, nobody bothered to see how badly previous bans had fared. Why bother when you can just ban something and pretend it goes away, when it really is opening up your entire government to ridicule? Update: And just like that, as the publicity about the ban spread, Morocco has lifted the ban.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Think of it as surfing or harnessing or hijacking the Streisand effect!

That aside, I have lived in a country where the censor laws are much stricter than just a ban of YouTube.
I've come to realise that no matter how hard a country tries to block something, it's always frikkin' easy to get past a block.

Of course, the UK should not be a republic, but this is not the time or the place to argue this point.
