Latest Industry Worried About The Internet: Porn

from the didn't-expect-that,-did-you? dept

For years, people have used the porn industry as an example of an industry that not only embraced new technologies, but helped drive them forward. From the VCR to the internet, the adult entertainment industry was often the first to push the limits. However, it appears that the established adult content industry is beginning to get worried about all that internet competition: "The barrier to get into the industry is so low: you need a video camera and a couple of people who will have sex," says one industry observer in the article. However, unlike other industries that resort to whining and suing, the interesting thing about the established producers of porn in this article is that they're doing what they should be doing: competing. They're trying to offer a better product. The article describes how they're trying to offer higher quality videos (no plots, of course, but better film-making) and then adding extras, including selling some DVDs with a second DVD with additional scenes. They're also working to increase their web presence and offering more to entice people into subscriptions. Finally, they're using free clips online to establish a lot more interest in their paid and subscription services. While they admit that the vast majority of people just view those free clips and never bother to move on to the paid services, enough do so that it's absolutely worthwhile. Once again, it seems like some other entertainment businesses could stand to learn a thing or two from the porn industry.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    .xxx domain

All porn sites should be regulated at the .xxx domain... that way kids and people can stay away.

I personally don't like surfing the web to stumble upone sites filled with porn and spyware!

    Re: .xxx domain

oh sure yeah that'll work. the porn industry, and in fact all online merchants, are absolutely law- and rule-abiding citizens and once we banish them forever to the land of .xxx, they'll never again be seen on decent computers!

it won't be a ridiculous domain-squatter landrush mega-clusterf*ck, it will be an orderly, peaceful diaspora.

    /sarcasm.

now, on-topic: it is refreshing, although slightly disconcerting, to once again see the porn industry faced with new/changing technology, and showing a depth of insight into the market that far surpasses the **AA groups.

    Re: .xxx domain

If you want to stop "stumbling " upon porn marky mark, maybe you should stop googling "BIG TITS".
Yeah and putting an .xxx at the end of a web address will really keep people away.
Was that bigtits.com or bigtits.xxx...I'm confused...I bet kids and people are gonna be baffled by that one.

    .xxx lol
this will only help registar comanies to collect a little bit more money, as bigtits.com will also need to register bigtits.xxx, and so will probably youtube and others.

the best porn is free porn. flickr, redtube, xtube, etc...

the achilles heel of the online porn industry is having to get the credit card info from the customer. if the porn industry could find the right partner, they would bury the porn billing in some innocuous charge from the partner that would be completely explainable on a credit card statement to a wife/boss/girlfriend/parent.

In other words, the porn industry is (nearly) unique in that it doesn't have it's head jammed up it's nether regions.
