Sweden To Try And Block The Pirate Bay, Again

from the didn't-work-last-time dept

Previous entertainment industry-led attempts to shut down The Pirate Bay torrent search engine haven't been successful, but the Swedish police are still trying to help out. Consequently, next week, the site will be blocked to anyone from inside the country who tries to visit it -- because it's being added to a list of child-pornography sites that Swedish ISPs block. A Pirate Bay admin writes on his blog that the police say that "if the content is still there next week", they'll add the site to the list -- but they won't specify what the offending content is (never mind the the site doesn't actually host and content on its own). It's highly unlikely it's actual child porn, though of course the entertainment industry has no problem equating file-sharing to child porn. But since the Pirate Bay is nothing more than a search engine, can Google expect to be blocked in Sweden soon? Yahoo? MSN? After all, chances are those sites link to at least one piece of copyrighted content.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. Here we go...

Well, the way it seems is that the internet will be censored completely in other countries as well as ours. This is simply what it's amounting to. What people need is to simply refuse to see, buy, any movies, music, software. Hit em in their pocket books. That's what needs to happen. There has never been nor is there any evidence that sharing has hurt any company. Many times, those who get free movies, software, music say they wouldn't buy it anyway. Not saying that's the case with everyone but I do believe it. So instead, they block everything...duh.

Let's face it, if you want to stop piracy at the source, do away with computers, and internet. Instead, they pick on search engines, not hosting sites, etc...dummies, people do find a way and pissing people off isn't going to help, for everything they take down, a new one grows. A new method of dealing with technology has to be placed.

Child porn is not shared on ThePirateBay. People that swap it are generally insanely cautious and paranoid, and use private networks where available, or proxy into obscure sites hosted on free hosts, and just use them until they are pulled. Consistently hosted content like a torrent is unheard of.

There are small amounts of child model galleries tracked via TPB, but to call them child porn is like calling a scrape an axe murder. Pictures of smiling kids in tight jeans and bikini tops is nowhere near porn, and even further from abuse. Any sexual message found in them is only there by the interpretation of the viewer.

    ‘What right did they have?’

    ‘Catch–22.’

‘What?’ Yossarian froze in his tracks with fear and alarm and felt
his whole body begin to tingle. ‘What did you say?’

‘Catch–22’ the old woman repeated, rocking her head up and down.
‘Catch–22. Catch–22 says they have a right to do anything we
    can’t stop them from doing.’

‘What the hell are you talking about?’ Yossarian shouted at her in
bewildered, furious protest. ‘How did you know it was Catch–22? Who
the hell told you it was Catch–22?’

‘The soldiers with the hard white hats and clubs. The girls were
crying. ‘Did we do anything wrong?’ they said. The men said no and
pushed them away out the door with the ends of their clubs. ‘Then why
are you chasing us out?’ the girls said. ‘Catch–22,’ the men
said. ‘What right do you have?’ the girls said. ‘Catch–22,’
the men said. All they kept saying was ‘Catch–22, Catch–22.’
What does it mean, Catch–22? What is Catch–22?’

‘Didn’t they show it to you?’ Yossarian demanded, stamping about
in anger and distress. ‘Didn’t you even make them read it?’

‘They don’t have to show us Catch–22,’ the old woman answered.
‘The law says they don’t have to.’

‘What law says they don’t have to?’

    ‘Catch–22.’

    There's a catch.

    A catch?

Sure, catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy, so I can't ground them.

Okay, let me see if I got this straight. In order to be grounded I've got to be crazy, and I must be crazy to keep flying missions. But, if I ask to be grounded that means I'm not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.

Wow... Yep that's exactly what it's going towards!

As for the sickos with kiddie porn, they're mostly on things like Limewire. I have to have all KINDS of filters up in order to make sure I don't get their filth. You can't even get regular porn now a days! :(

    Next thing you know...

Next thing you know the *IAA will be sneakily be distributing music and movies that ARE secretly encoded with child porn. Here's the latest chart topping album and all the cover art - available in compressed archives all over the net. Buried in that album art or the music files, via steganography, will be pictures of naked children. Then when the *IAA calls the police, the FBI, or their paid congress critters to report you downloading - they'll be telling the truth when they equate music downloaders with downloaders of child pornography.

"If the police would find anything wrong - shouldn’t they first contact us, then bring us in for questioning regarding the content, ask for our help or bring us to court for our wrongdoings?"

Thep problem everyone has here is they keep arguing about rights and such. Um, the only thing tha matters here is money. The RIAA/MPAA etc. have lots of it, therefore they can influence and buy whatever justice they want.

If you don't like that, well you should probably join the mormons or something. Because unfortunately the society we live in is run but corrupt cunts who steal money from the public left, right and centre. But not only do they do that, they actually convince the average Joe that what they do is right and just and that everyone else is evil.

I think one day we'll all worship the CEO of one of these corporations as our God.

    Pathetic....

Pirate Bay does host content, on http://bayimg.com/ (their new "uncensored image hosting site"). Whether or not there is child porn there I don't know - I haven't seen any, though there are some images tagged with 'porn'.

So it seems possible that the Swedish govt is targeting Bayimg, rather than Pirate Bay.

    Re: Simon

I don't know much about Swedish law, but if it's simply a matter of 'hosting' then the content arguments are moot.
PirateBay doesn't 'host' anything. There is no server somewhere in Sweden with all of this content on one box, it's just a search engine.

As stated in the article; this is no different then every other search engine on the web Except that TPB has pissed off the *IAA therefore they must be stopped.

    Lovely.

    Not just a search engine

Users knowingly upload and place a link to a tracker on TPB. It's not simply a search engine that spiders the interwebs.

Please help the entertainment industry sustain their old model. No need to just be able to download content on demand, we should have to go buy a CD each and every time we want to listen to something or watch something.

Heck, maybe they can develop technology that causes the CD/DVD to decay after a single use.

That's Entertainment Industry innovation at work!

I certainly don't agree with child porn, but they could care less about that, it's just another way to try and sustain the 'proper' method of buying content.

Create a service that charges a fair price for Music and Video and keep a database so that a customer can re-download any content they have ever purchased at a later date? LOL, what kind of good would that do???

Again, limewire and all those other p2p programs are not going to have real kiddie porn. Anyone can get into lime wire. The scumbags who have child porn use their own private networks or make account on free hosting companies and use them through proxies untill they are deleted.

I remember reading a few years ago about a court case in which it was disclosed that the largest distributor of child porn in the US was actually the US government acting in various so-called "sting" operations.

    Not afraid to speak out

Child porn yeah is just twisted but so is any gov't that steals freedom for the sake of "morality" trust me; there's not a single God on their side. Catch-22 is a good way to put our problem, we just let them get away with it. Why? Since the so-called drug epidemic the gov'ts have been shutting down their opposition, the free people. The movement in the 60s and 70s was quelled because they locked the subculture in prisons until they had no influence and thus we land in the pit we are in today. My words of advice: Don't let catch-22 succeed, we have to tell them that truly they can't do something unless WE THE PEOPLE wish for it. So, to the younger generation : remember history class. We are the power of the gov't and therefore we can control it. The beast is getting out of hand, we're crashing quickly.

    illegal

One of the absurds things is that US law has no legal value in Sweden. The RIAA should have no power, either, in Sweden. And they actually have no legal power there. It is scary to see how a private organisation can contact a ministry of Sweden and make him move the police to shut down the servers of a website that is doing nothing illegal, according to Swedish and European laws.

*If you don't like that, well you should probably join the mormons or something. Because unfortunately the society we live in is run but corrupt cunts who steal money from the public left, right and centre.*

Wll, our society hasn't been like this forever. Believing that there is nothing to do but to accept it as it is now is a very dangerous idea. It is a "learned" idea, it can be changed. It is not written in stone. Bigger empires have fallen before. F'ck them!

There is a need for a massive boicot. I really need no movies--they're usually crap anyway, specially those made by big *IAA friends. I haven't bought music in a long time. And I haven't downloaded any, either. Not even legal, free, music. I just listen to my music again and again, or don't listen to any. F'ck them.

    Not CP

99% of what they are calling child porn is actually those preteen/teen modeling sites where these little girls CLOTHES and all pose in different outfits looking so called "sexy".

just go to google images and type in preteen models or teen models and take a look at those sites, they are what people are downloading without paying for on TB.
