New Nigerian Scam Involves Cute Little Puppies

from the sucker-born-every-minute-ooo!-puppies! dept

The infamous "Nigerian 419" scam has been around for quite some time now. Having evolved since its original premise, the latest version of the scam preys upon dog lovers by goading them into paying exorbitant amounts of money to adopt nonexistent puppies from afar. In contrast to the original version of the scam, which appealed to people's greed, this latest version is unique in that it preys on the charitable -- people with big hearts that are looking to help out a few poor puppies. Whereas some may have held victims partly culpable in scams where the victims were looking to cash in on a large windfall, in the case of the puppies, it's hard to find fault in these scammed good Samaritans.

    Charity starts at home...

I'm still going to put some serious blame on those who get taken. If they wanted to help a dog, the local SPCA (in the US) has plenty of dogs that need homes. And they don't need thousands of dollars to get to your door - just wander over and pick one out for the price of immunizations and neutering.

Sorry, con artists have been plying their trade on the internet (and in the real world) for too long for me to have much sympathy for anyone who gets taken by a 'send us money up front' scam.

    Not a new scam

This isn't anywhere close to a new scam, they've been doing this via our own tax paid relay services for the deaf for years now. Both buying and selling puppies...it's pretty easy to spot though. The puppy scams, along with almost every other Nigerian scam wants to get you into corresponding via e-mail as quickly as possible, they'll always be off in another city/state when you ask where they are ... if they bother answering the question at all ... and if you provide a non-sensical statement that anyone else would be going WTF? to they'll just repeat themselves.

I recently got one from a poor Russian woman who is just barely making it on her government job. She is asking me to send her vitamins and dried food, but if that won't work money will do just fine. Then she can buy a cast iron stove to keep her and her daughter warm this winter.

    The grey area

There are outright scammers, and they can usually be identified by their lack of patience. Then there are other Russian women who have corresponded with me for two months, have never asked me for money, and I'm still not sure what to make of them. They send flowery romantic letters that sound a bit generic. I've made it clear I don't have money to visit Russia, they probably wouldn't be happy where I live, but we're still corresponding. If they do ask me for money in the future, I would close the door on them without a second thought. If they are scammers, they are the most patient ones I've ever seen.

      Re: The grey area

They contacted me through singles sites. They come from small towns in Russia, have average (not stunning) looks, and say they don't want Russian men because they hit women. They sound sincere on the one hand, on the other hand I wonder how many people they write the same letter to? They've told me detailed stories about their personal lives, which sound different from person to person. They may be who they say they are, I'm still not sure.

    Everywhere

These Nigerian scams are everywhere. Just a few weeks ago, I was selling my laptop via the Facebook marketplace.
I got a response that said he wanted to buy it, and he wanted me to ship it to his baptist friend in Nigeria. My first question was, why would you buy such an expensive gaming laptop for a priest in Nigeria. I played along, and sure enough the money was never place in my PayPal account, so I just sold it to someone else.

Don't they eat dog in Nigeria? Why would I want to send money to fatten up their herd?

Yes, there are more than enough local dogs in shelters to help instead of sending money offshore. Anyone who falls for this deserves to be taken.

The people who get scammed do deserve to be taken because they need to learn, but the money shouldn't go to that human scum. USPS just confiscated over 2 billion in fraudulent checks from Nigeria, they are getting away with way too much of our money and there seems to be no way to punish them. I think that the federal government should get involved and punish the entire country of Nigeria and it's leaders with sanctions for allowing this to take place, and any other country that harbors these scammers.

    "New"?

This scam has pretty much run its course already on craigslist. The scammers were hot and heavy posting two or three ads with photos of kickable little dogs and for exotic birds too. I haven't seen very many of them lately so I'm guessing it didn't prove to be too effective.

If people want to put a stop to the 419 scamming then all that needs to be done is get everyone to send replies to them expressing interest. The scammer posts 10,000 spams and gets 100,000 potential suckers responding - he's out of business in short order because he can't sort through them fast enough.

As for the Russian scammers - it's usually not the women actually running the scams, it's men. They'll have an internet kiosk or three, the women get a cut of whatever they can get out of the men. The scammer handles the transaction and provides the equipment so they keep most of it. There are some who actually charge the women to access the internet - sort of a 'scamchise' where you buy your little franchise and split the profits with "corporate headquarters" (i.e. the scammer with the computer and the internet connection)

The photos they post are usually fakes. The photos they collect from gullible men get used to create fake personal ads either for scamming (click fraud or getting money from women) or simply to inflate "member" numbers for the fake dating sites. They often steal personal ads wholesale - or trade them with other personal site scammers. I know americansingles at one time did nothing to pursue scammers who duplicated ads placed on there - and anyone who doesn't know that aff/friendfinder is mostly affiliate scammers isn't paying attention)

  • Only Scammers deserve to be Scammed

I like the idea above about everyone replying to these 419 Nigerian scams at the same time. Better yet, why don't we develop our own scams to send to the overseas scammers? That couldn't be considered illegal could it? Someone think of a way to do this.

Dear Minister General Vice President Ojabwe I am very excited that you want me to be your business partner to transver $34 million dollars (USD) of over-invoicing to me, to share with you privately. I think your terms are very reasonable. However, I am worried that you will give this wonderful opportunity to someone else. cute animal exploitation

At least in this scam the puppies are probably just pictures of puppies from somewhere else. On a visit to a city in Europe last year I saw beggars (who didn't look very European) on nearly every street corner, holding cute little kittens to grab your attention. It was heartbreaking. (OK, so I feel sorry for the kittens and not the people, what's your point?)

my scammer was as dumb as a box of rocks

I have found a way to beat them a little. Waste their time by saying yes, you will send money. I had a live messenger conversation for more than 2 weeks with one of those clowns. His email was beteny.brooks@hotmail.com. Feel free to keep it going. he will answer you immediately. tell him Emma sent you. Told him / her I was sending $1,000 three times, then they ran down to the Western Union and get the $$. LOL. "Beteny" send me a photo of herself which was copied off the USA U-tube site. A really cute American girl who probably really exists in Phoenix. I have no pity with them at all. This is a college student with a degree who wants to rent a room from me. If only she had a flight ticket and some $$$. The ticket manager is a man. That's who you send the money to. Then she needed money for her car, then her mother had breast cancer and was dying (swore on a bible) but then she inherited 5 million dollars and she was going to share with me, of course. If only I could send her $200.00, she can get the 5 million inherited from her dead father, who was murdered. I wrote pages and pages to her about my fictitious wonderful very wealthy life here in the USA, (we are related to the Bushes and have millions yada yada). The moron couldn't get enough of my stories! Nudged me twenty times per day to get more info. Tennis, horses, I have an "in with the visa dept" and my husband and secretary work for the Pentagon", yada yada.....Just tell them anything that may be credible and of benefit to them and you will have their ear for a long time. NEVER send one penny no matter what they say! They are all terrible, horrible crooks. They will sell you their own mother and naked children for two cents and never blink an eye. They "swear to GOD" constantly. It is an honor not to have to work in Nigeria! The bums work at night since we are up then, with the time difference. There they are,
sitting in their internet cafes running back and forth to money "outlets". If they don't get it and ask for it, they are made fun of at the Western Union stations". .Too bad. They can only answer so many emails per day, so keep them busy, busy, busy. I figured while I was having tremendous fun with my new penpal from Nigeria, they were leaving someone else alone. If you would like to have a good laugh, I will send you my correspondence. My email is kukile@hotmail.com.

Scammers dumb as a box of rocks

It is horrible that this "newest" scam is hooking people. I do animal rescue and there are so many, many puppies and kittens that need attention right here is the USA. The emails are sooooo convincing to some. We can only do our best to keep educating the common publis of these crooks.

On the other nigerian scam of emails from people wanting to "rent a room" I have gone through that with trying to find a good roommmate for my daughter. She lives in the LA area of Southern California. OMG the scammers come out of the woodwork to answer the Craig'slist posting for a roommate. They come from African nations, Nigeria, England, poor young women and men having tons of money to rent the room for 12 months (of course paid in advance) for only the slight fee of $500 USD sent to them for the cost of changing their currency into USD!!!

Yep, yep, I fell off the turnip truck yesterday to that is why I have sent out so much money!!

I knew that the email sounded too good to be true when I first read it, so I decided to do a search on the name Beteny Brooks and found a few different sites stating that the name is related to scams. I got to thinking that they must work nights to be able to respond to my ad at 2:15 p.m. Pacific time!

Thanks so much for responding. I must confess I am quite comfortable with the cost and it is okay by me .I will like to make the first month payment ahead of my arrival and the subsequent month will be effected thereafter as I plan to stay for how long the lease is drawn. So i will Contact my Client to see how you'll get a money orders/Cashier's Check from which I will like you to deduct the fee for the Place and you will help me wire down the balance via western union to a charity home in Holland in care of children with heart related diseases, orphans and the older citizens and the less previledged.I have been committed to them for three years now this is a way of saying I will never forget them wherever life takes me.....and part of the money would be for my flight ticket to The states. I should be arriving Soon all things being Equal if this arrangement is okay by you, also i will be signing leases and applications by then because I can't get any of that done here now. I will now need your FULL NAME, FULL ADDRESS AND CELL PHONE NUMBER so as to prepare the money orders/Cashier's Check. I will also like to know the nearest airport to the house. We Got Scammed and Lost $85

I sent $85 which was all the money I could scrape together yesterday 8-24-08 to a religious scumbag in Nigeria for an adorable 4 month old Yorkie puppy named Vince.

We saw Dr. Walker's ad on craigslist for rehoming a Yorkie puppy. We were first contacted by this e-mail from Fred.Barett@yahoo.com: Hello,
I got your email about Vince the Yorkie puppy. Well the puppy belongs to Dr Dave Walker who reside in West Africa, he only asked me to help him look for a better home for his puppy back in the States, reasons best known to him.

I will like you to contact him and he will give you more info about the puppy. Here are his contact details below.

    Name: Dr Dave Walker
    Email Address: dave.walker47@yahoo.com
    Phone Number: +2347025377675

Make sure you contact him because i have taken away the ad from craigslist.

    Regards
    Fred Barett.

Here is the correspondence. I plan on contacting international authorities and the FBI.

Hi, We sent a message to your friend who wrote us back. We really would like to see the little one and possibly adopt him...

    Pam & James Gray

    Good Day Pam,

I just came to office this morning and saw your mail about your interest in having my cute Yorkie puppy. I know you were being directed by Mr. Fred Barett to contact me about Vince. The reason why i need a good home for Vince back in the States is because of the weather here in Africa which is too harsh for him and he is the kind of puppy that deserves the best.

Vince is very cute, lovely with kids and other pets, current on shots and vaccinations, potty trained and 100% health guaranteed. He is just 4 months and some days old and i bet you will love and enjoy his company so much. Attached below are his lovely pictures. Kindly let me know if you are really interested in having him before i give you the adoption and shipping cost and also let you know how he would be delivered to you.

    Thanks and God bless
    Dave Walker

    Wow, Vince is so precious!

I'm afraid I ain't going to be able to pay the shipping costs from Africa though. Do you have any idea how much I will have to pay to receive this cutie?

I would love to be able to get him out of Africa and have him here in this air-conditioned home....but you must realize that I am living offa student loans at this point.

    Pam =o)

    Hello Pam,

Thanks for your response. I can see from your mail that you would really love to have Vince and am also very much willing to see you have him because to what i read from your mail, i believe that Vince will find joy and comfort in your home and he will surely be a blessing to your home because he is so full of fun.

The shipping cost is only $345 but if you cannot afford the $345, then let me know how much you can really afford to see what i can do to help you get him. Right now i am not collecting any adoption cost from you anylonger because i understood from your mail that you are living offa student loans but just like i said the shipping cost is only $345 and if you still cannot afford it, then let me know how much you can afford. Get back asap.

    Thanks and God bless
    Dave Walker

    Hi Dr. Walker,

Maybe if we could make some arrangements to where I can pay you $20 a month until I get you paid off.....I dunno! I just know we were tickled pink to hear back from you.....The pictures of Vince are just adorable and we'd love to have him live here....I'm sure he would sleep with us, and we'd play with him all of the time....

If you can find it in your heart to send him to us....Our address is Pam Coursey, 2013 Robin Wood Blvd, Moncks Corner, SC 29461. He would be loved tremendously....and you can visit him anytime you want to when you are back in the states again. Actually, if you would like, we can foster him, and possibly allow him to return to you. I'm sure it isn't easy to let the little one go.

I will gladly look up any shipping & receiving information from Africa to the US....and I am certain it will not be a problem to pick Vince up from a port of some type around Charleston.

    Love,
    Pam =o)

Thanks for your response. I understood from your mail that you would like to pay $20 each month until i get paid off, well that is too small to make the arrangement of shipping Vince to you and besides, i just want to know how much you can really afford right now to see what i can assist you with to complete the shipping fee and not paying me monthly. So kindly let me know alright. I know you really want to have Vince and i will do my best to see you have him but you must let me know how much you can afford right now.

I have also gotten your informations where you want Vince to be delivered to but you must let me know the nearest airport to you so that we can have him come through that airport. Hoping to read back from you.

    Thanks
    Dave Walker

I can come up with about $85 today, and that is scraping! lol The timing is wrong, but I would make your puppy a good mommy! I don't want to insult you or Vince.

    Pam

Thanks for your response. I can see that all you can afford is $85, well it is very small but i will assist you in getting Vince because i believe Vince will find joy and comfort in your home and that is exactly what i want for him but please make sure you give him the best home he deserves.

Get back to me with your full name, shipping address, direct cell number and the nearest airport close to you before i give you the informations which you will use to send down the money via money gram and also give you every detailed informations on how Vince would be delivered to you.

    Thanks
    Dave Walker

You are being more than generous but here is the problem I have. I am more than willing to send you the money for Vince and I am sure his value is priceless. Yet I feel uncomfortable sending the money first without being for sure I will get him. I also understand that you are in the same place. In a world where trust is or has become an issue it is hard for the both of us. Now here is what I am proposing. If you are willing to send him and I can verify that he is on his way then I will immediately send the money to you which I will make certain it will take place. I will not dishonor the trust we can establish with this exchange. Best of Regards. Pam

    Hello Pam,

Good day and thanks for your response which was very well understood by me. I know you really want to have Vince and the reason why i want to help you get him is because i believe you will provide him with a good home and i know he will surely find joy and comfort in your home. As for the issue of you being scared of sending money first without getting the puppy, well i understand we all have to be careful with the way we deal with people over the internet due to the rate of scam going on these days but at the same time, you cannot see everybody doing business over in the internet as scammers and i know how it hurts to get scammed. So please take your mind off any doubt because i cannot imagine a matured, family and Godly man like myself trying to cheat on people out of their hard earn money when i know it is a big sin and a person that does such will never go unpurnished. So be relaxed and be rest assured that you will definitely have Vince and even if we Human Beings does not see or know what is in the Human mind, Almighty God in Heaven sees and knows what is in every Human Mind.

You should also know that i only want to help you get him because i can see the zeal in you of getting him. Also there is no way i can have him sent to you first before sending down the money because i want to add some money to the one you will send to process the shipping and i can only give you every detailed informations of the delivery after the shipping procees has been done and there is no way it can be done without making the payment first. So if you truly want to have Vince, pls just take your mind off any doubt and get back to me with those informations of yours i requested so that we can proceed further.

    Thanks
    Dave Walker

    scam

I'm a Nigerian. We have over 150,000,000 people in this country and the population of people that have regular internet connection is less than 5%.The percentage of those people that will send scam messages is about 10%(but they're dedicated). You must not conclude that the whole country is full of scammers.I live here and i haven't been scammed b4.Attempts ha been made though and i succeeded in wastin their money on the phone.I can can't conclude that everyone in America is a pornstar,or that the whole of America as a country have to be punished for pornography because a handful of Americans decide to pollute the internet with such obscenities.I love this country it's one of the best place, filled with the most wonderful people.I won't blame you guys 'cos that's d part of us you've come to know.On behalf of the whole nation i want to say, am sorry.

      Re: scam

Hi Mr. Man From Nigeria....I'm Pam, the one who was puppy scammed. Since then I have enjoyed teaching Hispanic children with Reading and Math. I guess I just want you to know that my mind is much more open now to tolerance of different cultures. I do realize that your country is over-crowded and poor. We all experience disadvantages sometimes...and people who are in need will steal....If you ask me, that is the smallest of all sins....I guess what I am saying is that if you give to someone in need, you never miss what you gave.....And usually, you can add them up....all the blessings that are returned to you!
