Dallas Cowboys Return Cowboys.com After Thinking The Price Was $275 Instead Of $275,000

from the false-start.--10-yard-penalty dept

The domain name business is hot again, driving up the price of popular domains names, sometimes to ridiculous levels. However, it appears that no one briefed the Dallas Cowboys on what these types of things typically cost. The owner of the domain cowboys.com recently sold it in a domain auction, with the winning bid of $275,000 going to the Cowboys. Apparently, on receiving the invoice, the Dallas Cowboys are claiming that it was a mistake -- they thought the bid had been for $275, not $275,000 -- and therefore, they wish to cancel the sale. Of course, some people are suggesting that this is merely a cop out from a team that has a bit of buyer's remorse. It does seem a bit bizarre that anyone would think they could get such a domain for $275.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Cletus was even more surprised that the owner wouldn't take food-stamps.

275k is nothing to a team that pays millions to its players.

I can just hear it now...

"Uhh.. we thought the, uhh.. price was a typo and that the, uhh.. comma was supposed to be a period and the, uhh.. 3 zeros after it were actually supposed to be, uh.. 2 zeros."

    Hahahahahahaha

We are talking about management for the Dallas Cowboys Football Team. This seems like a perfectly legitimate mistake to me. They signed T.O. didn't they?

    Backfired!

Cowboys.com moved to silent auction and end up selling at $370,000

Now, Dallas Cowboy will never get Cowboys.com for anything less than that!
They may be able to get it for near cool $1,000,000 ;-)

actually $275K is not a bad price, considering what some domains have gone for. they should rethink their rethinking of the purchase, quick before the price goes way the hell up.

if i were to guess what cowboys.com would be worth, my first guess would be in the 7 figures, not 6.

    Re:

I have to disagree on this one- lets be honest, $275,000 is a lot of money that can be out towards a lot of other things. Any person (or business) that considered $275k to be nothing needs to reevaluate its priorities.

I ran into the same problem when I bet a nickel on the Cubs. My bookie could't understand when I handed over five pennies.

  12. Say What?

Jerry Jones has no money problems, just another case of "buyers remorse". Nobody makes that kind of mistake.

They could never put cowboys info on it

The moment someone tries to put Dallas Cowboys or NFL copyrighted material on a site they would get sued. They probably make more then $275k off a person in licensing costs.
