Musician Upset That He's Being Used In Lawsuit Against Pirate Bay

from the not-against-it-at-all dept

Earlier this year, Swedish prosecutors finally filed charges against the Pirate Bay, using some of the evidence given to them by the IFPI. Among that "evidence" was a list of Swedish musicians supposedly "hurt" by file sharing. Apparently the IFPI didn't bother to check with those musicians to see how they felt about this. One Swedish hip hop star stood up to the IFPI pointing out that he has nothing against the Pirate Bay and, in fact, is "pro-file sharing," which is even represented in his music. On top of that, the IFPI doesn't own the rights to his music. Because of this, the IFPI has now had to cut back on how much money they're claiming the Pirate Bay owes them. However, if they did that with one artist, it makes you wonder how careful the IFPI was with other musicians as well.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

That was arguably the least intelligible comment I've ever read on this site and there have been a few.

I think I understand your point, not that it has anything to do with the article, but for Christ's sake man read your comment just once before you post it.

My take is that the Artist should sue. False representation is ultimately fraud and is something that most countries have laws against! You can't just go naming arbitrary complainants in a suit just to add more weight to it! Be interesting to find out just home many artists on their list actually feel aggrieved.

    Hey - whaaaa?, 17 Apr 2008 @ 6:15pm

    I never agreed to that

I thought you had to ask before making claims on behalf of someone else. Who do these people think they are ?

I would not like it if someone went around claiming that they represented me when I did not authorize it.

Is this in a grey area right next to identity theft ?

Re: I never agreed to that

I'd imagine their train of thought went like this:

"We own all music, which Swedish acts can we use in our lawsuit?"

It probably didn't occur to them that there was such a thing as popular and/or respected acts that didn't fall somewhere under their own membership, and they've probably retained rights to use their members as they wish.

I hope that the Swedish mainstream media pay as much, if not more, attention to this as the original lawsuit. They've definitely crossed the line here, though I fear that further lawsuits may not be the answer.

It just goes to show that it's the major record industry, not just the RIAA, that's the problem.

    Agree.

Seems like consumers have less and less rights these days and even the talent that makes the corporations rich are being brushed aside... makes you wonder why we ever bought cds in the first place.

If only there could be a way to self market oneself and still be successful without the corporate label bs. Tila did it with myspace.

More of that for artists (with real talent) please.
