DailyDirt: Cures To Whatever Ails You...
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
Medicine has improved a lot over the years, but there are still plenty of treatments out there that aren't based on evidence that they actually work. Some modern snake oils are backed up by technobabble worthy of a Star Trek episode, and others just appeal to "common sense" for justification. Here are a few quick links on some "reliable" medical treatments.- This TEDtalk points out how to identify bad medical science through publication bias. If you flip a coin a hundred times and ignore half of the times it comes up tails, then maybe you're not doing something right. [url]
- Buying cocaine without a prescription was once commonplace -- to cure all sorts of maladies, like "flatulence, colic, hysteria, hypochondria, back pain, muscle aches"... Whenever there's fun, there's always coca-cola..? [url]
- Neuroscience could point to more effective treatments for various addictions and improve the success rate for rehab clinics. They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, "No, no, no..." [url]

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
