Music Labels Trying To Force Pirate Bay Offline Now

from the hmm dept

Earlier this month, we noted that the record labels were already stretching The Pirate Bay ruling to use it to go after web hosting firms who clearly were far separated from the actions of their clients. And, of course, the ruling itself is both being disputed, due to conflicts of interest, and also being appealed. But, it appears that the record labels are so freaked out by how badly the ruling has backfired on the industry that they're trying to do anything to regain what they think (incorrectly) is the moral victory. Among the web hosting firms they're approaching is the one that provides bandwidth to The Pirate Bay, and the music labels are demanding it to stop. Also, the labels are demanding more money. This is notable because for all the problems with the original ruling, it didn't do two things: order the site shut down or provide any guidelines regarding future infringement. So, now it appears that the labels are simply taking that matter into their own hands and interpreting the ruling beyond what it actually said. At some point, will they actually realize that everything they do here is just making things worse for themselves?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I'm surprised you asked.

"At some point, will they actually realize that everything they do here is just making things worse for themselves?"

    No. Next question.

    Bandwidth

Is that why the Pirate Bay has a sucky connection today? I thought it was my internet connection.

      Re: Bandwidth

Use open dns on you router, I had the same issue. after changing turn everything off and reboot, should route right around their weak attempt.

The #s are below, if you cannot find in your router do it on you network connection directly in the TCP/IP properties.

      208.67.222.222

        Always have.

TPB is better now. I do believe it was my ISP doing it (not targeting TPB just running slow), what I posted was just a joke.

yaaaaawn. These losers can keep beating their heads against the wall. History will repeat itself and there will be better sites that emerge when/if they kill pirate bay.

Mike - I like how we are specifically referring to these inconsequential efforts from the music LABELS these days. The industry is alive and well...and The Pirate Bay might be one of the "healthiest" reminders of that

Put they won't have that style. The Pirate Bay has that whole pirate flair going for it. Their attitude is notably different than other torrent sites. More human, less of an automatically generated feel.

When will the labels be sued for extortion?

    It's funny

I've bought several movies as a result of bit torrent. They were movies that I'd only been marginally interested in or, because of the boringness of where I was, simply needed *something* to watch. I've been pleasantly surprised enough by some movies that, rather than *never* bothering to even rent them, I discovered that I wanted to buy them.

Apparently the plaintiffs are appealing the verdict—as if winning wasn’t enough—because they reckon the penalty was too low.

Wait, you mean that all our problems won't magically go away if we shut down the interwebs?
