Record Labels Demanding Cash From Pirate Bay Founders

from the good-luck dept

While The Pirate Bay case is still on appeal, the major record labels would rather not wait for due process, and are now demanding that two of the site's founders pay up, since the site is still operating. You may recall that, separate from the original ruling against The Pirate Bay, the court later granted a different injunction against Gottfried Svartholm-Warg and Fredrik Neij from even working on the site. The record labels are arguing that since the site is still operating, those two must still be running it. It's worth noting that both of those guys no longer live in Sweden -- and both insist that they have stopped operating the site (though who knows if that's true). Either way, it's somewhat entertaining to watch how desperate the labels are to make something stick on these guys.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Here, to save you the trouble of trying to "discuss" with The Anti-Mike, a list of fallacious argumentative techniques.

Copyright infringement is bad because it's illegal and it's illegal because it's bad.

I hope the recording industry gets the money so the recording industry can give it all to the struggling artists.

Poor struggling artists. See how they struggle? Pity the poor struggling artist.

I hope the recording industry wins.

Yeah! Poor Lars Ulrich. You know, I saw him driving a tuktuk yesterday. I wanted to ask him why he was doing it but it was obvious that he has no more money because he lost it to all the pirates.

I hope the recording industry wins so Lars won't need to drive a tuktuk anymore.

Well if these guys would just stop putting everything in a single ship then the pirates could only touch bits of their stuff. Gotta split it into multiple ships so the pirates might pillage one or two ships but the others will remain safe and most of your assets make it across okay.

      Re: hmmm

They don't do this because it couldn't end well for them. At best, they would just lose the court case, but at worst it could set a legal prescedent that guys like The Pirate Bay could use to get around them. It's unlikely that Google would cave to the RIAA, and they have enough legal guns of their own that it would be a more-fair fight.

    Strange logic

Following the same logic as the labels, George Washington must still be president, because the USA is still running.

    For what?

They want money for what exactly? There is no money here that belongs to them. They would not have received any money from us for downloading torrents from other peoples computers, and if it wasn't TPB it would have been someone else we got the .torrents from. TPB didn't share the files, WE did. On top of that, when will the artists actually be paid?

I beleive after the raid a few years ago the founders claimed the had set up the site in a way that it could not pulled down again from a single location. Not being an IT person I have no idea what they could have done but, it looks like they did something right....
