DailyDirt: The Age Of Super Lightweight Stuff

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Civilizations were previously categorized by the materials they used: copper, bronze, iron, steel, plastic, etc. The advancements in material science haven't quite had as much of an impact on society as they used to. Still, there are plenty of really cool materials now that didn't exist just a few decades ago. Here are just a few examples. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    aerogels are pretty pricey!

thinkgeek sells this stuff for ~$40 for a little tiny piece... so on a weight basis, this stuff is insanely expensive.

"The advancements in material science haven't quite had as much of an impact on society as they used to" - oh sure and semiconductors weren't that much of an advancement right?

I want to make a car out of this stuff. When someone gets me upset I'll pick up my car and threaten to throw it at them.

Good point with semiconductors. Lasers, too... and maybe someday if we ever find room temperature superconductors, that'll be huge.
