DailyDirt: Ads Are Content

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

One of the recurring themes around here is that advertising should be engaging and entertaining, not annoying. Every year, there are excellent examples of this truism -- during the halftime of the Superbowl. Some ads are easily forgotten, but some are remembered for decades (and even associated with the products they were trying to promote). Here are just a few more reminders, just in case you're busy this coming Sunday. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Geiko Ads

I always watch one of the current Geicko ads to the end just to see that Gekko line dancing!

Have any of the ad content providers complained about piracy of their content?

Something like: Those freetard pirates giving us free advertising! How dare they.

ad agencies might care about piracy..?

advertisers probably don't care so much about getting free advertising... but I'd guess that certain ads (like ones that have specific music licenses) make ad agencies care about piracy..?

    What's with the StumbleUpon ads?

Ads masquerading as content. Because the SEO-gaming internal and self-referential links aren't bad enough.

"Apple's classic "1984" superbowl ad seems to be one of the few things remembered from that game's advertising. Who are the "drones" now?"

I like this 1984-esque ad better.

How about moose bacteria growing advertisement?

    Contagion - Bacteria Billboard

If it was in the US Warner Brothers probably would be have some executives in Guantanamo by now.

      Re:

That's pretty disgusting... sure, the bacteria/fungi on that giant petri dish are benign, but still... really gross.

    Bueller

CRV ad left out Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) and used a semi-look-alike. Wonder if that was the whole pedophilia thing? Sadly, they also left out Richard Edson--an unsung hero of indy cinema, as the valet.

Oscar Meyer wieners and Chili's commercials

Am I the only one who finds myself sometimes remembering "I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener" or "I want my baby back baby back"?

Seems like I have more problems forgetting the catchy jingles....

Isn't it amazing how these advertisers are using....the Internet (gasp) to generate buzz for their commercial/product?
