DailyDirt: That's A Spicy Meatball, But It's Not Italian...?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

It can be difficult to nail down the definition of American food since immigrants from all over the world have settled in the US and created a distinctly different varieties of their traditional cuisines. If you didn't realize it, fortune cookies are not a Chinese dessert (Chinese-American, yes). So what other foods aren't as authentic as you might think? Here are just a couple other examples. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Italian meals

There is plenty of meat in Italian meals. It's just not served with the pasta. So, if you only have pasta dishes, you won't get much meat, but that's like complaining that if you only eat appetizers you don't get much meat.

Milanese speciality is "Cotoletta alla milanese", which is big hunk of battered and fried veal and not much else.

    Actually they originated in Japan.

Lobsters are not common in Italy, first of all. However, there could have been a similar dish with a different kind of crustacean.

    Prawns maybe?
